Meet Jessica

Social Entrepreneur and Movement Leader

Jessica Nowlan is a social entrepreneur and movement leader, dedicated to building the resources and structures needed to achieve true liberation. With over 20 years of experience, Jessica has made it her mission to support women and girls impacted by violence, poverty, and incarceration, while advancing racial and economic justice.

Early Life and Involvement with YWFC

At the age of 17, Jessica was hired by the Young Women’s Freedom Center (YWFC) while she was in Juvenile Hall. She had survived homelessness, life on the streets, and incarceration. This opportunity transformed her life and marked the beginning of her lifelong commitment to the movement for justice and freedom.

Leadership at YWFC

Jessica later returned to YWFC as Executive Director at a critical time for the organization. Under her leadership, she grew the staff from 3 to 75 people, expanded the organization’s reach by opening 5 more centers across California, and increased the budget from $500,000 to $10 million. She launched innovative initiatives like Sister Warriors and Beloved Village, helping to ensure that YWFC continues to serve as a beacon of hope for young women.

Building Economic Freedom

Currently serving as the president of ReImagine Freedom, Jessica channels her personal and professional experiences into leading an organization focused on economic freedom. She mobilizes the necessary resources to sustain the work and ensure its long-term impact, always keeping the vision of liberation at the forefront.

Accomplishments and Fellowships

Jessica was a 2019–2021 Leading Edge Fellow, recognized for her exceptional leadership and impact. Throughout her career, she has played a key role in building and scaling businesses and supporting organizations in strategic planning. Her work centers on empowering women and girls at the intersections of violence, incarceration, poverty, and workforce development. She also serves as an advisor to the Liberty Hill Foundation.

With her deep commitment to justice, Jessica continues to pave the way toward a future where true freedom and equity are possible.
